The Undergraduate Student Government passed a resolution to request the implementation of four-year guaranteed housing for undergraduate USC students at their meeting on Tuesday night.

The resolution passed unanimously and requests the university’s administration to provide permanent residence for undergraduate students during their time at USC.

Sixty-four percent of USC’s student body live off-campus or commute to school as USC only provides first-year and “Sophomore Guarantee” housing.

Additionally, the university itself has informed students of concerns that come with living off-campus such as understanding tenant rights, avoiding housing scams and safety considerations. The resolution uses this as evidence of the struggle that most USC students face for a large part of their time in college.

Universities such as Harvard, guarantee their students four years of housing with other universities reporting 70-90% of students living on-campus, of which USC falls short according to College Transitions.

USG called for the university to explore pathways to ensure affordability for students looking for housing and encouraged transparency surrounding undergraduate housing availability and off-campus displacement.
