The Grammys are a reflection of the cultural landscape, a portrait of this past year and a snapshot of the future. New artists signaled new chapters, Album of the Year reflected a cultural shift within music, and Record of the Year redefined boundaries within music genres.
Bad Bunny, one of the most beloved artists of the moment, was among the night’s top nominees, earning six nominations and drawing significant attention during the ceremony. His album “DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS” earned him a Grammy for Best Música Urbana Album. “DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS,” written primarily in Spanish, won Album of the Year, a historic first for the Latin music category. He ended his night with a hat trick — three Grammys in his arms — as his iconic song “EoO” won Best Global Music Performance.
Nevertheless, Bad Bunny was not the most awarded artist of the evening. That distinction belonged to Kendrick Lamar, who won five Grammys that night and now has a total of 27, becoming the most-awarded rapper in Grammy history, surpassing Jay-Z’s long-standing record, People reported. Lamar, along with SZA, received the Record of the Year award for “luther.” The album “GNX” is hip hop in its most introspective form: reflective and vulnerable. The lyrics touch on themes of internal growth, self-reflection and emotional intimacy.
Tame Impala took home the award for Best Dance/Electronic Recording for his album “End of Summer.” Parker’s work in past years had consistently been rooted in psychedelic pop. Nevertheless, this album blurs lines between categories like rock, psychedelia and electronic subgenres like house and trance. It is what many fans consider to be his most danceable production yet, aligning with a rising trend across genres as artists like Harry Styles, Bad Bunny and many others begin to create music that draws from the disco movement.
Olivia Dean brought home the prize for Best New Artist. The winner of this award has always represented a step in a new direction for the future of music. This year, we are seeing a fusion of contemporary pop, jazz and even soul. In a YouTube interview discussing her musical influences, Olivia draws inspiration from legends like Amy Winehouse, Aretha Franklin, and Carole King, making her music feel nostalgic and timeless while incorporating a fresh rhythm.
Lady Gaga’s wins for Best Pop Vocal Album with “Mayhem” and Best Dance Pop Recording for “Abracadabra” served as a reminder that moving forward does not necessarily mean moving on. Lady Gaga has spent her entire career reinventing herself, shifting between different music categories and even within the entertainment industry itself. Her most recent shift is the unapologetically danceable rhythm of her music. Her shows are the equivalent of theatrical performances.
Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell received the Song of the Year award. While other awards focus on performance or genre, Song of the Year is based on the song’s composition. The lyrics behind “WILDFLOWER” reach a level of unmatched emotional maturity, as Billie publicly calls herself out for her errors in the past.
As the night came to an end, the results captured a year of transition, defined by legends and new voices coming together to shape the future of music.
