The cloudy sky seemed odd for a Saturday afternoon in Carson, California, but still, it proved to be the perfect weather for a beautiful game of soccer.
It is postseason time for Major League Soccer and Dignity Health Sports Park, home of the LA Galaxy, welcomed Nashville SC for a ticket into the next round of the MLS Audi Cup race.
In the first half the Spanish Midfielder, Riqui Puig, took charge on the pitch, leading the strings of play. Through him, a number of opportunities came for Javier Hernández and Douglas Costa, the two starting attackers for the team led by Greg Vanney. However, not much action was taken on either side to influence the momentary result of the match.
The fans did not let their guard down as they eagerly waited for the goal to arrive through a symphony of chants and cheers.
It was until the fifth minute of the second half that Chicharito opened up the scoreboard with a wonderful right-legged shot making it past Nashville keeper, Joe Willis. However, after a trip to the monitor, VAR advised referee Armando Villareal to recall the goal for a previous foul on the play. The foul that was attributed to defender Julián Araujo occurred three minutes prior to the goal. And since the foul had initiated the scoring run, Chicharito’s attempt was called back.
It would later be Araujo, who in the 60th minute, would arrive with a header to put the ball in the back of the net. With this, Araujo scored his first playoff goal in his career and placed the LA Galaxy on their way to victory.
The last time the Los Angeles Galaxy won an MLS Cup title was in 2014 when manager Bruce Arena led the “galácticos” to the podium. With 61 points in the season and a total of 69 goals, the Angelenos placed their fifth star on their crest. Back then, their leading striker was legendary Irish soccer star, Robbie Keane, who ended the regular season as the third striker with the most goals (19). Today that leadership role lands on the shoulders of Javier “El Chicharito” Hernández who currently holds a total of 18 goals and two assists this season and stands in the race for most valuable player.
The next task for LA Galaxy is to visit the current Supporter’s Shield winner, LAFC, who just so happens to be their archnemesis. This edition of “El Tráfico” will take place this Thursday, October 20th at 7 p.m. and will grant one ticket into the western conference semifinal.
