On Jan. 30 at around 1 p.m., thousands of protestors gathered at City Hall to call for Immigration and Customs Enforcement to leave Los Angeles and to stand in solidarity with Minnesota amidst deadly confrontations with ICE. The national day of action included hundreds of businesses shutting down across Los Angeles in support, as well as hundreds of students walking out of their schools.
Organized by the Los Angeles branch of the Party for Socialism and Liberation and endorsed by more than 20 local organizations, the protests remained largely peaceful for several hours as participants marched throughout the city. Later, under the sweltering heat, participants marched to Boyle Heights and back while others remained near the city center.
In the late afternoon, protestors experienced tense moments with federal agents outside the Edward R. Roybal Federal Building, culminating in the LAPD issuing a dispersal order and federal agents using pepper balls and deploying tear gas, as reported by CBS. Some participants were arrested, and others set fire to a dumpster around 10 p.m.
