Doctors officially cleared USC freshman guard Bronny James to make a “full return to basketball” on Thursday after he suffered cardiac arrest back in July, according to a statement by the James family spokesperson.

“The James family would like to express their gratitude to the incredible medical team, the entire USC community, and especially the countless friends, family, and fans for their love and support,” the statement said.

In addition to James being cleared by his doctors, USC staff will conduct a final evaluation this week. He will resume practice with the team next week and return to games soon.

James arrived on campus this summer as a five-star point guard from Sierra Canyon High School in Los Angeles, ranked No. 6 in the country at his position. James averaged 13.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists in his senior year.

James chose to stay home at USC over top programs in Kentucky, Oregon, Michigan, Ohio State and Memphis. He joined the latest recruiting class for the Trojans, with guard Isaiah Collier, forward Brandon Gardner and center Arrinten Page as the No. 3-ranked class in the country.

USC men’s basketball has started the season strong at 5-2 and will begin Pac-12 conference play next month.
