Beyoncé’s “Homecoming” was nominated at the 71st Annual Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, held at the Nokia Theater on Sept. 14. That night, the Emmy awards joined the constantly expanding list of award shows to snub Beyoncé of accolades that she deserves.
Beyoncé’s “Homecoming” was up for six Emmys and lost in every category. She lost to shows, which to be honest, did not deserve to win against the masterfully designed, produced and performed concert documentary that was “Homecoming.”
James Corden’s, “Carpool Karaoke,” won the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded). A show with go-pro cameras attached to the windshield of a car, in which celebrities sing songs and tell jokes, won over “Homecoming” — a concert documentary film that included pyrotechnics, multiple camera angles, lighting and stage design.
Beyoncé is not a stranger to losing award shows, especially to ones that comparatively are not up to par.
Traveling back in time to 2017 when Beyoncé’s “Lemonade” lost to Adele’s “25” for Album of the Year at the Grammys, Adele was riddled in shock that she won against Beyoncé. She stated in the press conference after the show that “My album of the year was “Lemonade." I feel like it was her time to win...What the f--k does she have to do win album of the year.”
There have only been 12 black entertainment artists who have won a Grammy for Album of the Year in Grammy Recording Academy history. Of those, only two have been R&B/Hip-Hop artists. Beyoncé has been nominated for Album of the Year three times and has lost them all despite having 20 Grammys in other categories.
The 57th Annual Grammy awards was another snub for Beyoncé for Album of the Year. She lost to Beck for Album of the Year and the trending twitter hashtag was #whoisbeck? Beyoncé's self-titled album changed the way that artists released music. Surprise album drops and complete album visuals are now a norm thanks to her.
The ultimate Beyoncé snub is an infamous moment in pop culture. “ I’m sorry but Beyoncé had the best video of all time.” Those were the words a drunken Kanye West spewed when he ran on stage yanking the mic from a wide-eyed Taylor Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards.
