New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie endorsed presidential candidate Donald Trump on Friday at a rally in Fort Worth, Texas.

Christie, a former Republican presidential candidate, introduced Trump at the event, giving his surprise endorsement.

"I am proud to be here to endorse Donald Trump for president of the United States," Christie told the crowd of 8,000. "The best person to beat Hillary Clinton on that stage last night is undoubtedly Donald Trump."

Christie's is the highest ranking elected official to endorse Trump thus far.

"He's been my friend for many years, he's been a spectacular governor," Trump said.

A Christie adviser told CNN the former presidential rivals have a 14-year relationship.

Christie will accompany Trump to an event in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Friday evening.

Trump is currently the GOP front runner following three straight electoral victories.

He will see if his winning streak continues on Super Tuesday, March 1, when several primaries and caucuses are held throughout the United States.
