LIV Golf shuts down after a five-year run

LIV Golf is officially closing and selling off its assets, bringing its rocky five-year run as a breakaway league to an end. The professional league launched in 2022 and was named after the number of holes played at each tournament. Backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, LIV attracted PGA Tour players such as Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, and Byrson DeChambeau, all of whom hold multimillion-dollar contracts and challenged the structure of professional golf. After losing that funding and filing for bankruptcy in September of this year, the league pursued a relaunch, but the deal ultimately fell through.
