This year’s Halloween celebration coincided with the highly anticipated USC football game against Ohio State University, and many Trojans celebrated by dressing up for the football game and the tailgates on campus.
Trending among Halloween costumes were matching couple costumes such as ketchup and mustard, Nikki and Bear from the movie “Obsession” and Fred and Wilma Flintstone from “The Flintstones.”
Denise Dayag, a pharmacy graduate student, celebrated Halloween by watching the USC Trojans beat the Ohio State Buckeyes. Dayag and her friends wore matching costumes. She dressed up as a mustard bottle, and her two other friends went as ketchup and relish.
The thought behind the matching costumes was simple.
“We wanted to get on the jumbotron,” Dayag said.
Regarding trending costumes, Dayag said she saw many students dressed up as Nikki from “Obsession.” This year’s Google’s Frightgeist report placed ‘Obsession’s Nikki and Bear duo costumes in the top three trending searches.
Salvador Navarre, a USC alum who graduated in 2017, celebrated Halloween and ten years of tailgating with his friend group.
“We dressed up as rodeo clowns this year because we wanted to partake in the festivities and hopefully give us good luck against the Buckeyes today,” he said.
For Ellie Mendoza, a junior studying communications, her costume was less recognizable than others’ costumes on campus. She dressed up as Katy Perry at the 2010 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, before the singer got slimed.
Her costume idea came to her because she felt that she needed to pair her newly dyed hair with her outfit.
“I dyed my hair blue for the second year in a row, and I needed a costume to go with it,” Mendoza said. “I was walking to the store to get some groceries and it just occurred to me, just randomly.”

She felt Nikki costumes were very popular this year, as well as candy bar costumes.
Despite the rain, Trojans made this Halloween a memorable experience with trendy costumes and USC’s success against the Ohio Buckeyes.
