With Oklahoma City back on top of the standings and several contenders tightening the race behind them, the hierarchy of the NBA’s best teams continues to shift. Boston and San Antonio remain elite two-way teams, while Detroit has struggled to find rhythm on offense. The last month of the season is surely going to be exciting!

As the regular season enters its later stages, the standings across both conferences are beginning to separate into clear tiers. Oklahoma City has emerged as the league’s most complete team, while Boston, San Antonio and Detroit continue to solidify themselves as championship contenders. Here are this week’s rankings of the NBA’s top teams:

1. Oklahoma City Thunder (50-15) Oklahoma City regains their spot as the league’s best team this week, both statistically and in the standings. With 50 wins already, the Thunder have created separation from the rest of the Western Conference. Their identity is built around defense, and since superstar guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s return from an abdominal strain, their defense has only gotten better. They still hold the best defensive rating in the league at 105.9, and are constantly controlling the pace of games. Combined with a top-five offense, they are still the league’s most balanced team.

2. Boston Celtics (43-21) Boston moves into the second spot this week behind one of the league’s most explosive offenses. The Celtics currently rank second in the league in offensive rating at 119.8, and last week superstar forward Jayson Tatum made his season debut after tearing his Achilles last April. With his return, they get one of the best shooting forwards in the league, and a player who will space the floor even more. When they are shooting well from beyond the arc, they look like the best team in the Eastern Conference. After a statement win against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday, the question has to be asked: Are the Celtics the best team in the East?

3. San Antonio Spurs (47-17) The Spurs sit comfortably near the top of the Western Conference standings while continuing to produce elite numbers on both ends of the floor. Their defensive rating of 110.1 ranks third in the league, while their offense remains inside the NBA’s top 10. San Antonio’s structured offense, built around ball movement and smart decision-making, allows them to consistently generate efficient scoring chances. They may not always dominate games athletically, but their execution makes them one of the most reliable teams in basketball.

4. Detroit Pistons (45-18) Detroit slides into the fourth spot but still remains a clear leader in the Eastern Conference. Defense continues to define its success: the Pistons hold the second-best defensive rating in the league at 108.7, allowing them to shut down opposing offenses while maintaining steady offensive production. Lately they have struggled to find offensive rhythm from beyond the arc, which has led to a 5-5 record in their last 10 games. However, they have been extremely strong at home with a 23-8 record, giving them one of the best home-court advantages in the league. As long as their defense remains elite, Detroit will remain one of the most dangerous teams heading into the playoffs.

5. Minnesota Timberwolves (40-24) Minnesota climbs into the top five thanks to its defensive consistency and physical style of play. The Timberwolves have gone 8-2 record in their last 10 games, and have jumped to the third seed in the Western Conference. They currently rank eighth in defensive rating at 112.2, regularly contesting shots and controlling the boards. Their defensive identity keeps them competitive even in games where their offense struggles. The team’s biggest challenge remains scoring consistency. When Minnesota avoids offensive droughts, their defense gives them the ability to beat almost anyone.

6. Cleveland Cavaliers (39-25) Cleveland continues to rise thanks to its efficient offense and improved team chemistry. The Cavaliers currently rank fifth in offensive rating at 117.4, allowing them to generate steady scoring even against strong defensive teams, anchored behind center Jarrett Allen’s surge as one of the biggest paint-scoring threats in the league. The team’s ball movement has improved significantly, creating better shot selection and more balanced offensive production. If the Cavs continue to build on that offensive efficiency while maintaining defensive stability, they could become a serious threat in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

7. New York Knicks (41-24) The Knicks are still struggling to jump into the top of the Eastern Conference, due to inconsistent stretches this season. While they have not been the second seed since the beginning of the season, they are still playing very efficient basketball. New York holds one of the best offenses in the league, ranking third in offensive rating at 118.4, while also remaining inside the top ten defensively. Their physical play style and ability to execute in late-game situations have helped them consistently grind out wins throughout the season. Their disciplined coaching continues to make them one of the toughest teams to face in the East, and we’ll see if they are able to edge out Boston in the standings.

8. Houston Rockets (39-24)- Houston remains one of the best defensive teams in the league, but chemistry issues raise concerns about this team’s ceiling. After the controversial Kevin Durant Twitter/X situation where he supposedly called out his teammates on a burner account, the Rockets have been a middling 6-4. While they force a large amount of turnovers on defense, they also turn the ball over on 16% of their possessions, which is currently 28th in the league. Also, Fred VanVleet’s ACL injury might have really changed the course of the season for this team.

9. Los Angeles Lakers (39-25) The Lakers continue to hover near the top tier of the Western Conference thanks to their efficient offense. Los Angeles currently ranks sixth in offensive rating at 116.5, allowing it to remain competitive against elite teams. The Lakers’ offensive versatility gives them multiple scoring options, particularly in high-pressure situations late in games.Their issue throughout the season has been defensive, particularly against severely athletic teams. They sit at the No. 5 seed and will seemingly match up against Houston in the first round. This is a favorable matchup for them, but against other teams in the West, they will most likely be at a disadvantage.

10. Denver Nuggets (39-25) Denver rounds out this week’s rankings despite having the best offensive rating in the league at 120.0. Its offensive system thrives on precision passing, spacing and efficient shot selection. Even without overwhelming athleticism, the Nuggets’ ability to execute in half-court situations makes them extremely difficult to defend. The issue has been their 24th-ranked defense, which has caused some questionable losses to both the Warriors and Knicks in the last two weeks. If the Nuggets can tighten up their defense in the coming weeks, their elite offense has the potential to carry them deep into the Western Conference playoffs.
