On Feb. 23, during the final day of the “EVANGELION:30+; 30th ANNIVERSARY OF EVANGELION” event hosted in Japan, fans were treated to the announcement of a new production from the franchise. During the film program, a short teaser trailer showcased the staff behind the new series with still shots of a cello and piano, important instruments featured in previous films.
“Neon Genesis Evangelion” is a Japanese anime series that follows the story of Shinji Ikari, a middle school boy given the burden of piloting giant humanoid mechs known as “Evangelions.” The story details him fighting against aliens known as “Angels,” while struggling to adapt to his new environment and the relationships he forms with those around him. Originally airing in October 1995, the series celebrated its 30th anniversary in late 2025.
While there have many other installments in the franchise, such as the “Rebuild of Evangelion” film series concluding in 2021 with “Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time” and numerous games and comic series, this new production serves as the latest installment for the future of Evangelion.

However, unlike the original series penned by Hideaki Anno, NieR creator Yoko Taro will step in as Anno’s replacement. The new production will be co-directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki (known for his work on “The End of Evangelion” movie and “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX” series) and Touko Yatabe (known for her work on the recent “Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc” film and on the “Rebuild of Evangelion” film series). The music of the new series will be orchestrated by composer Keiichi Okabe, who was also brought over from the NieR series. The series will be produced in collaboration between Studio Khara and Cloverworks.
