Los Angeles FBI says USC threat is a hoax

Students were notified of a direct threat towards an employee resulting in ‘heightened security’ on campus.

Campus police, LAPD and the FBI are investigating a threat against an employee who works inside the Bovard Administration Building, a TrojansAlert message sent at 2:06 p.m Thursday said. DPS has not clarified yet whether there is an active threat to campus or whether students should avoid the area.

Increased security is in place around campus, the message said. There was no visible police presence near Bovard as of 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

UPDATE 4:46 p.m.: USC informed the LAPD and FBI of a threat that originated from outside of the U.S. The message contained threatening and racially charged language and was determined to be a non-credible threat by law enforcement.

UPDATE 4:07 p.m.: The FBI told Annenberg Media that they had no information to indicate the threat as credible, and said they were aware of other hoax threats being made to schools in the Los Angeles area. An LAPD spokesperson confirmed to Annenberg Media that no police were on campus directly responding to this threat.

UPDATE 3:30 p.m.: The Bovard Administration Building has been closed off to everyone besides authorized individuals, campus security told Annenberg Media. Additional DPS officers are stationed around the building.
