The Los Angeles Football Club suffered its first defeat in over a month on Sunday, falling to Austin FC 1-0 after a late goal.
Before the match, LAFC was on a six-game winning streak and making a push for the top spot in the Western Conference. However, the loss ended both those hopes and the team’s impressive stretch of matches.
LAFC was without its star attacking duo in winger Denis Bouanga and forward Son Heung-Min, both of whom are still on international duty. Austin FC played a low block for the majority of the match, and Los Angeles struggled to break down Austin’s defense and find any offensive spark without its two playmakers.
The lone goal in the match came in the 83rd minute for Austin FC after Los Angeles conceded a corner kick. Austin midfielder Owen Wolff managed to capitalize on a loose ball near the back post after LAFC couldn’t clear it away.

Until the final 10 minutes of the match, all signs pointed toward a goalless draw as neither side produced many goal-scoring opportunities. The two squads registered only two shots on target each and combined for just eight shots throughout the entire 90 minutes.
“As we do at LAFC, we will turn this into a positive,” said LAFC head Coach Steve Cherundolo. “It’s much better to lose tonight than it is in a couple weeks.”
LAFC will now travel to face tenth-place Colorado Rapids for the final matchweek of the 2025 MLS regular season. LAFC is confirmed to finish in the top four of the Western Conference, while Colorado is fighting for a wild-card position, making it a consequential match for the Rapids.
