The Colorado Rockies took the series with the Los Angeles Angels, 2-1 at Coors Field. Both teams are out of playoff contention, so this series showcased a lot of the team’s younger players, and the result was another hit to the Angel’s disappointing season.
The first game of the series was an offensive showcase for both teams as the Rockies defeated the Angels 7-6. There were five runs scored between the two teams within the first two innings, with the Rockies taking an early two run lead in the first inning off an RBI triple by catcher Hunter Goodman and a sacrifice fly by first baseman Blaine Crim.
The Angels answered back in the second inning with a two-run home run by second baseman Christian Moore and a solo home run by shortstop Denzer Guzman to take the lead 3-2. This didn’t last long as the Rockies tied it up in the bottom of the second off an RBI single by right fielder Tyler Freeman.
The scoring was at a stand still until an electric fifth inning. The Angels took back the lead with an RBI double by first baseman Nolan Schanuel to bring in two runs for the Angels followed by a sacrifice fly by third baseman Yoan Moncada making it 6-3.
The Rockies came back swinging with an immediate four-run answer. Crim started the onslaught with a sacrifice fly bringing in the first run. Soon after, center fielder Brenton Doyle hit a two-RBI single off an error by center fielder Bryce Tedioso. Lastly, shortstop Ezequiel Tovar hit a sacrifice fly to take the lead 7-6 and eventually win the game after four scoreless innings for both teams.
Game two of the series was a glimmer of hope for the Angles. Designated hitter Mike Trout hit his 400th career home run 485 feet dead center late in the eighth to solidify the 3-0 win against the Rockies. Left fielder Taylor Ward and Schanuel also had solo home runs to make up the three run total for the night.
The Angels have struggled to find a hold within their pitching staff. But, right-handed pitcher Kyle Hendricks had an impressive seven innings giving up no runs with five strikeouts. This comeback offered the chance for them to take their final series.
Despite the upward momentum taking a 3-0 shutout to the Rockies, after Trout got home off right fielder Jo Adell’s single in the first inning, the Angels were unable to get anything done offensively.
The Rockies went on to score their first run after three walks by Angel’s right-handed pitcher Caden Dana when third baseman Kyle Karros hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game. After that, it was all Crim for the Rockies, a standout player for them this season, hitting a leadoff home run in the fourth, and then hitting an RBI groundout in the eighth to help the Rockies win 3-1 and take the series.
The Los Angeles Angels will return to Angel Stadium to take on the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday and attempt to add one last good note before the season comes to a close.
