Upcoming events in LA to celebrate Latine Heritage Month

Latine Heritage Month begins Sept. 15 and lasts until Oct. 15. The month is a time where communities come together to honor and celebrate Latine heritage and culture, often bringing about a number of community events involving food, music, and dancing.

In Los Angeles, there are several events and celebrations themed for Latine Heritage Month that appeal to all ages and interests. Here are some of the highlighted events happening across the city in the upcoming month for you to check out.

Día de Los Dodgers Night

On Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 7:10 p.m., the LA Dodgers are hosting their Día de los Dodgers game at Dodger Stadium to celebrate Latine heritage and their historic contributions to Los Angeles baseball. With the purchase of a ticket to this game, attendees will also receive an exclusive Día de Los Dodgers Night jersey.

Muertos Art Walk

On Saturday, Oct. 8 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., the Olvera Street Merchants Association Foundation will be hosting an art walk on Olvera Street. The free event will feature live music performances, and over 35 local artists selling a wide variety of merchandise. The goal of the event, aside from celebrating Latine culture, is to help support local businesses on Olvera Street.

Sugar Skull Pot Painting for Día de los Muertos

The Day of the Dead happens to be celebrated in the same period as Latine Heritage Month, and the Encina-Tarazana Library will be hosting a free event for children and adults to gather and paint pots under the theme of Día de los Muertos. The event will be on September 27th from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Encino-Tarzana Library, 18231 Ventura Boulevard.

Born in East L.A.

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will be hosting a screening of the 1987 film, Born in East L.A. on Saturday, September 20th at 7 p.m., at the David Geffen Theater. Tickets start at $5 to watch a film that traces the story of Rudy Robles, a Mexican American who is deported from the United States by mistake and is left to make his way back across the border.

The event will be located at The Academy Museum. David Geffen Theater is located at 6067 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90036.

Está Vivo: The Gods and Monsters of Guillermo del Toro

From September 23rd to October 8th, Beyond Fest will be hosting a course of feature screenings as part of their film festival of Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro’s most significant and impactful work.

The screenings will include 12 features where Toro has worked on, and invite audience members to experience his artistry and journey as a storyteller, leading him to become an Oscar-winning director. Some of the screenings include Hellboy II: The Golden Army, The Shape of Water, and Pan’s Labyrinth. Tickets for the film festival screenings can be purchased at beyondfest.com.

¡Viva la Resistencia!

From now until Sept. 26, Los Angeles City Council District 1 will be hosting an event free of charge from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to celebrate the history of resistance across Latine, Indigenous, and immigrant communities in Los Angeles.

The gallery exhibit will highlight how various forms of artistic expression, food and cultural dances played a role in combating injustice. The exhibition will be curated by Eduardo Gómez and Alexa Ramírez Posada.

The event will be located at Henry P. Rio Bridge Gallery at City Hall, 200 North Spring Street Los Angeles, CA 90012.

Tributo a Los Grandes: José José, Juan Gabriel and Vicente Fernández

On Sunday, September 28th, The Ford will be hosting in partnership with Mariachi Tierra Mía, a night of celebration and performances of some of the most iconic figures in Mexican music. The event will start at 7:30 p.m. with tickets starting at $44.

The artists who will be present include Mariachi Tierra Mia, Anthony Zuniga, Folklórico Revolución, Maira Solis, Stephanie Amaro, Ivan Peña, and Deni Morales. The event acts as an opportunity to honor and enjoy several Mexican artists who have helped shape the history of Mexican music. The event will take place at The Ford, 2580 Cahuenga Blvd. East, Los Angeles, CA 90068.
