Miki Yamane played hero for the LA Galaxy Saturday night after scoring a late equalizer in the 87th minute to force a 2-2 draw on the road against the Seattle Sounders. The league-worst Galaxy were facing playoff elimination with a loss.
LA entered the game missing many key players, including star midfielders Riqui Puig and Marco Reus and young forward Matheus Nascimento.
A quick goal on a breakaway from Jesús Ferreira gave the Sounders an early 1-0 lead in the 5th minute. Seattle would add on to their lead in the 41st minute on a short tapper from Danny Musovski. Maya Yoshida would score a header on a cross from the left post in the 44th minute to make it a 2-1 Sounders lead entering halftime.
In the second half, Seattle forward Paul Rothrock scored a header on a short corner kick, but it was ruled offside, and the score remained 2-1 Seattle. Sound defensive play would keep the Galaxy in the game throughout the second half, including a key stop from Novak Mićović in the 78th minute.
Eventually, Miki Yamane would tie the game in the 87th minute, scoring on a sliding kick on a loose ball near the right post. Neither team was able to score in stoppage time, and the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
Seattle had control of possession for 58.4% of the game compared to LA’s 41.6%. Seattle had more shots on goal and shot attempts than LA, but the Sounders recorded 2 yellow cards while the Galaxy did not record any. Mićović had 7 saves for the Galaxy while Seattle captain Stefan Frei had 5.
The Galaxy have not won in Seattle since 2016, and they now hold an 0-9-7 record on the road this season.
LA will return home next week on September 20 to face F.C. Cincinnati.
