“Migrating History: Stories Untold Stories of Immigrants in the U.S.” is a podcast made with the intention of uncovering the hidden or forgotten narratives of immigrant and Latine history. Now, more than ever, with the Trump administration’s emphasis on immigration in the country, it is important to learn, and sometimes unlearn, the truth of the historical attitudes and events, revealing that the Latine plight for immigration reform is not new. This podcast attempts to unmask the myth of American Exceptionalism with an emphasis on the historically hostile governmental behavior towards immigrants.
Today, we’re diving into a dark but important chapter of U.S. history — the Santa Fe Bath Riots of 1917, the racist, dehumanizing practices that led to them, and the larger context of the U.S. Immigration reform. This is a story of resistance, of systemic oppression, and of policies that connected the U.S.-Mexico border to the horrors of Nazi Germany. We have guest speakers, Historian David Romo and Professor Estefania Castañeda Pérez, come share their insights!
