Ruffled Feathers

Residents and trappers react to the rising peafowl population in suburban Los Angeles County.

Hundreds of peafowl have invaded residential neighborhoods across Los Angeles County, settling in suburban backyards, front lawns and sidewalks. “Ruffled Feathers” follows Jonathan Gonzalez, owner of Raptor Events, as he traps and relocates peafowl across Los Angeles County.

South Pasadena resident Su Kim is one of many homeowners who have hired Gonzalez, finding the presence of the colorful birds disruptive. However, not all residents are unwelcoming of the peafowl. Chapman Woods resident Maria Gunnell spends about $300 a month feeding the peacocks who reside near her home. She feels sympathetic toward the birds and is concerned by a single question: if not here, where do the peacocks go?
