Patty Smash closes its doors just months after opening near USC

The restaurant is now the third to close at the same building — within a year.

The smashburger spot Patty Smash, which opened January 13 to much local buzz due to free burger handouts, has already closed its doors.

Located just off campus at the corner of 29th Street and South Hoover Street, the restaurant appeared shuttered during a visit on Tuesday. Its doors were locked, and calls to the restaurant go straight to voicemail. No explanation has been provided, and as of Tuesday, there was no announcement on Patty Smash’s website or social media accounts about its closure.

This is the second time that 2827 South Hoover St. has changed cuisines and closed its doors this school year. Over the summer, Trojan go-to Study Hall, which opened on September 26, 2014,  was replaced with Roadside Taco, a Mexican restaurant. Roadside Taco was closed by the beginning of the spring semester, but still appears as open at the location on Google Maps.

Patty Smash offered a simple menu centered around customizable smashed burgers, fries, and shakes. It became a go-to for late-night bites and weekend cravings, for a short time.

It’s unclear whether the closure is temporary or permanent, and there is no sign indicating what business, if any, will take over the space.
