According to Bloomberg News, China is considering reducing or banning imports of U.S. films in response to Trump’s tariffs
In the past, China has been a major market for American film releases. In the last year two films surpassed 100 million dollars in ticket sales there... “Alien Romulus” and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire”
Leah Wu, a School of Cinematic Arts student from China is not a surprised by the possibility.
“There’s very strict restrictions on the foreign films in China back to like 10 years before, I don’t know,” said Wu. “It’s [been there] for a long time so I’m not that surprised I would say.”
Gabriel Rossman, a professor at UCLA studying cultural industries said the effect on Hollywood would be less today than in the past.
“They would in other ways basically overly restrict U.S. film market access to Chinese theaters in ways that were really unpredictable,” said Rossman. “And even before this latest move Hollywood had kinda started to feel that the Chinese film market was more trouble than it was worth.”
Sihan Li a film and television student from China said she sees China protecting it’s own industry as part of larger trends.
“China is trying to have our own film industry that doesn’t want to get too much interference from the outside,” said Li. “But I don’t feel China is the only country that’s doing that. The whole world is kind of not hold together anymore. It’s falling into pieces. So yeah, I feel sad and angry about that.”
In fact, last month Chinese animated film “Ne Zha 2″ broke the record for the top grossing animated film of all time
Tino Garcia Gross, a sophomore majoring in writing for screen and television worried about the artistic effects of the potential ban.
“If you cut one country off from any other country, especially a big country like China and a big country like the United States in terms of film, I think that you you’re losing a lot of inspiration between the people who make them but also the market would be very different,” he said.
The situation currently remains up in the air. As the two countries are in conflict about increasing tariffs.
