Parity in Film

Female filmmakers discuss the challenges they face working in a male-dominated industry.

Two filmmakers, Eva Neuwirth and Deanna Esposito, explain what it’s like to be a woman making a career within the film industry. Despite progress having been made in recent years, they discuss areas in which working as a female filmmaker is still met with pushback. This pushback comes from both male-dominated workspaces and expectations placed on female filmmakers overall.

However, there are organizations and nonprofit groups that provide help for aspiring female and non-binary filmmakers trying to get their foot in the door.

Maikiko Jones is the senior director of programs at Women In Film, a nonprofit that offers fellowships for filmmaking. Jones discusses the work that still needs to be done to achieve parity in the industry. She also shares what women and non-binary filmmakers can achieve in a post-parity filmmaking world.
