Former One Direction member Liam Payne died after falling from a third-floor balcony of the CasaSur Palermo hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, local police confirmed Wednesday.

In a statement provided to the Associated Press, Payne “had thrown himself from the balcony of his room,” according to the spokesperson for the Security Ministry of Buenos Aires municipality. He added that the police were dispatched to a hotel due to an emergency call regarding an “aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”

Emergency workers then confirmed the death of the 31-year-old British singer who was reportedly found in the hotel’s interior patio.

State officials are also investigating the situation and conducting an autopsy, according to the AP.

In 2023, Payne opened up about his struggles with addiction in a YouTube video. He had previously spent 100 days in a rehabilitation facility.

Payne rose to fame in 2010 with Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson when their boy band, One Direction, was created on the British singing competition “The X-Factor.”

The band released five albums and played in 545 concerts before breaking up in 2015.

Since then, Payne released a solo album, LP1, in 2019 and has collaborated with other artists, including French Montana and Dixie D’Amelio. His 2017 hit single “Strip That Down” featuring Quavo reached the 10th spot on the Billboard Hot 100.
