Students march silently to support Asna Tabbasum

Around 300 protesters walked quietly around campus to represent how USC has silenced the valedictorian, they say.

Today the US vetoed a bid to make Palestine a full-fledged member of the United Nations.

Twelve of 15 Security Council members voted in favor of the proposal on Thursday, while the United Kingdom and Switzerland abstained. The Palestinian Authority received enough support to have its bid referred to the General Assembly, but the negative vote by the US — which wields the veto power — was enough to block it.

Close to home, here on USC’S campus, students held a protest over the issue of the University rescinding the offer of the 2024 Valedictorian to speak. Joining us in the studio live is Jennifer Nehrer, who was live on the scene.

Around 300 people gathered at Tommy Trojan this afternoon to protest the university barring valedictorian Asna Tabassum from speaking at commencement. They wore masks to symbolize Tabassum being silenced and hoodies to represent her hijab, one speaker said before the march began.

After hearing a few leaders speak, protesters walked silently through campus - the only sounds being their feet on the ground and media helicopters overhead. When they reached Annenberg Hall, the crowd stopped to hear another speech before breaking into chants and returning to tommy trojan.

One attendee said she marched to support who she called “the first hijabi valedictorian at USC.” Another said he joined the protest because the University “has gone far and beyond their limits.” Students say they’ll continue to protest until and through graduation if they must.
