As April rolls around, USC celebrates another Earth Month filled with events and sustainability initiatives. Earth Month celebrations support USC’s sustainability framework, Assignment: Earth, which focuses on addressing climate change and creating a sustainable future.

Here’s a rundown of this month’s festivities:

USC Arts and Climate Collective Festival

Earth Month activities commenced on April 2 with a festival hosted by the Arts & Climate Collective which celebrated and highlighted local, student and USC organizations for their work in environmental justice and sustainability.

Students were able to attend panels, participate in workshops, view artwork and walk through a resource fair of 20+ vendors and organizations.

Attending an event

USC and several different USC organizations are hosting over 50 events for students during this year’s Earth Month. There’s a variety of events, ranging from panels to beach clean-ups to dialogues intertwining the conversation of faith with environmental justice.

Some standout events consist of:

  • April 4—USC’s annual Climate Forward Conference which will explore past, current and future of climate policy
  • April 9—An information session on USC’s investment strategy and position on environmental, social and cultural issues
  • April 9—A dialogue on the intersection of mental health and environmental justice with the Environmental Student Assembly
  • April 11—A conversation on the current state of L.A.’s environment with Jane Fonda and other L.A. climate communicators
  • April 17—A discussion with USC’s Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO), Michael Dalrymple, about his time as USC’s CSO and the choices he’s made
  • April 18—A town hall with USC faculty and administration from the Presidential Working Group on Sustainability and Office of Sustainability
  • April 25—A Delta Murphy Lecture on storytelling and the fight against climate change through science journalism featuring Pulitzer Prize-winner, Ed Yong

All events are free for USC students and only require pre-registration on the USC calendar to attend.

Planning an event

Students are also able to host their own Earth Month event by submitting an event through the USC calendar. Student event planners will be responsible for promoting, planning and ensuring that the event is accessible. Space reservations for events can be made with Trojan Event Services which provides spaces in the Trojan Campus Center, Bovard Auditorium, Trojan Grand Ballroom, Tommy’s Place and other outdoor venues. Students can also reserve a space with a department at their discretion.

Students can keep up-to-date with Earth Month by visiting USC’s sustainability website.
