Angel City FC supporters crowded in the Fan Fest at the Exposition Park lawn, making their way into their third NWSL season, where they hope to solidify their aspirations toward a title run. The home opener celebrations included a celebratory dance to commemorate Saint Patrick’s Day from the Celtic Irish Dance Academy. However, Angel City FC wasn’t lucky.
The night was filled with many firsts. The first sister duo to play for Angel City FC and the NWSL were the Thompon sisters, Alyssa, 19, and Giselle, 18. The debut of new players, such as Kennedy Fuller, a 17-year-old midfielder who was the most impactful player for Angel City during the first half and the closest to scoring a goal. Fuller kept her composure, had many recoveries, and created many plays.
Bay FC marched into BMO stadium for Angel City FC’s home opener in front of a sold-out crowd of 22,000. In the end, Bay FC took home the three points in its one-to-nil win. Bay FC’s Asista Oshoala led her team to victory with the lone goal, while Angel City had unsuccessful eighteen shots on goal.
The player of the match for Angel City FC was Sarah Gorden, a defensive wall throughout the game with much-deserved chants of her name. Her star-studded, goal-preventing performance was highlighted by teammate and captain Ali Riley in her post-game interview.
“We did have chances, but I also have to shout out Sarah [Gorden] and Paige [Nielsen],” Riley said. “Asisat Oshala is a top nine in the world and they really shut her down.”
The stars were also out at the game, including Angel City investor and internet personality Lily Singh, Ted Lasso’s Jason Sudeikis, Mia Hamm, and USC’s Trojan family member Vanessa Bryant.
Bay FC’s defense was on par as it provided a strong challenge with what felt like every ball being sent to the middle and directly to the goalie, whom two teammates were always there to defend. They were vital in defending Alyssa Thompson’s breakaways. There was a shift in the second half; Angel City completed more passes and made more goal attempts. However, it was not enough for the win. Even though the outcome was not in Angel City’s favor, the fans never stopped believing as they chanted, “Dale Dale Angel City FC.”
“We’re just excited to be back rooting for our girls at ACFC. These women are amazing; they’re talented,” said Daniel, decked out with Angel City pride at Fan Fest. This seems accurate as Angel City is ready to move on and focus on their next game against Orlando Pride this Friday, March 22, at 5 pm PST. The eager Angel City fans wait to see their favorite women in action at home on the 21st of April at 4:30 pm PST against NC Courage.
