INDIANAPOLIS — A day of athletic performances at Lucas Oil Stadium was highlighted by Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy breaking the all-time record in the combine’s most iconic event, the 40-yard dash.

“As a kid, seeing John Ross run that, I never thought I’d be on that stage and be able to do it,” Worthy said in an interview with NFL Network after his run.

Worthy ran a 4.25 in his first attempt, already the fastest time of this year’s NFL Combine to that point. His fellow receivers could be heard celebrating with him in the end zone, advising him to “take those shoes off” and ride with his first time.

Instead, he decided to run again, telling NFL Network’s Stacey Dales he was going for the record. As his 4.22u was broadcast on the jumbotron, Worthy took a victory lap around the stadium, met with deafening applause from fans. Worthy’s official time was later confirmed to be 4.21, making him the fastest player in the NFL Combine’s history.

As the remainder of the receiver group moved into ball drills, Worthy had put his sweats and backpack back on, electing not to participate in the remainder of the day’s drills. According to Dales, this was not in response to his time, as she said Worthy told her his original plan was to only participate in the 40-yard dash.
