Anthony Bottino: That was the sound of the USC Thornton school of music’s symphony rehearsing for their big night this week. The Thornton Symphony is performing their annual New Music for Orchestra concert this Friday night at 7:30 PM in Bovard Auditorium. Led by Donald Crockett, chair of the Composition program, the concert will feature original works from Thornton’s student composers. When I stopped by the rehearsal in Bovard earlier today, I was lured in by a sound I’d never heard before ...

Bottino: That sound was the voice of Hannah Rice, one of the six student composers with a piece in the concert. Rice is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in music at Thornton. I reached out to Rice to hear more about the meaning behind her music, but I haven’t heard back - probably because she was busy rehearsing. But according to the concert program, Rice is a composer and a coloratura soprano which is type of soprano.

Bottino: Her music features themes rooted in deepening her understanding of personal and collective human experiences, especially those of women. Currently, she is interested in exploring the raw, cathartic release of screams and the different ways she can recreate this sound and feeling in vocal and concert music.
Fatimah Ogunmowo: So, Anthony, now that you’ve heard the sneak peak, do you think you’ll be attending the concert this Friday?
Bottino: You know, originally I didn’t have any plans for Friday night but after hearing that, I am intrigued and I am hooked. So I’ll definitely be there Friday night.
Ogunmowo: I also didn’t have plans this Friday night, but it feels like now I do! So I will see you Friday.
Bottino: Looks like I’ll see you there.
