Tiger Woods withdrew from the second round of the Genesis Invitational Friday due to a flu-like “illness.” Woods had to be carted off the seventh hole, ending his run at the event at The Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California.
“Ultimately the doctors are saying he’s got … potentially some type of flu and that he was dehydrated,” TGR Ventures EVP Rob McNamara said. “He’s been treated with an IV bag and he’s doing much, much better, and he’ll be released on his own here soon.”
An ambulance was called for Woods for on-site medical assistance, however he declined to go to a hospital.
According to McNamara, the illness is unrelated to his physical state and the back problems he was having during Thursday’s first round.
“My back was spasming the last couple holes, and it was locking up,” Woods said Thursday.
This marks the third time Woods has withdrawn from a tournament in his last six appearances. The Genesis Invitational was Woods’ second tournament since his injury and withdrawal from the 2023 Masters. He played and finished all four rounds of the Hero World Challenge between November 30 and December 3.
Woods was also limping throughout the start of the second round. “I was so disappointed to see Tiger struggling to walk on hole 3, he looked miserable and very uncomfortable,” longtime PGA spectator Glen Davidson said.
It has not been released whether Woods will make an appearance as the host of the tournament on Saturday or Sunday.
For Woods, the beginning of the second round ran similarly to the first. Despite birdieing the first hole two days in a row, Woods’ game became weaker as the day went on. Woods had two bogeys in a row and finished hole 6 with a par before calling it quits at 2 over par for the tournament and 1 over on the day. At the time, Woods was fighting to stay in the tournament, with the projected cut line currently at 1 over.
Woods has yet to comment on his illness.
