An atmospheric river has placed USC under a flash flood warning. Since yesterday, more than six inches of rain have drenched Los Angeles, flooding streets and causing power outages.
Sharon Taggese is a freshman studying cyber security. She’s not from here and says she is used to torrential downpours.
Taggese: I guess it doesn’t really bother me as much as other people, which I understand why it would bother them, but I grew up where it rained quite frequently, so it doesn’t really affect me that much.
Computer science major Venkat Verana is also not a native Angeleno. He says that the rain here is different from where he grew up.
Verana: So, from the place where I come from, we have, like, a rainy season where, you know, there’s, like, these three months where it’s going to rain heavily or lightly. It’s only going to be those three months. But in L.A., it’s weird because sometimes you get these rains continuously for like three days, and then it’s a sunny day. It’s it’s completely different.
Despite the rain making it hard for people to get to class, Sharon Taggese says she’s glad the university didn’t move completely online today.
Taggese: I like in class settings, especially because it’s better to interact with the professor that way. Which is also why, like, I don’t really mind the rain and, not canceling class, classes. However, zoom is a good option for those who want to stay inside. And if I if I was, like, tired one day, like I would participate in that too.
Meanwhile, Michael Debarros, a freshman studying theater says the inclement weather did move his class to Zoom, and it brought up bad memories.
Debarros: It reminds me a bit of the pandemic and I didn’t. I didn’t enjoy my time at the pandemic. It wasn’t. It just wasn’t a positive experience. And for this, I just feel like when it comes to things like zoom, we don’t really have a, we don’t have a strong attention span when it comes to things like that.
Pay attention to the weather as Los Angeles is expected to receive even more rain tonight and tomorrow.
