Three people were taken to the hospital Wednesday after a shooting near the intersection of Jefferson Boulevard and Budlong Avenue, according to a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department.

Police identified the suspected shooter as a Black man but offered no additional details about the shooting when asked by Annenberg News, stating it was still under investigation.

The shooting happened just a block away from the USC campus at about 4 p.m., according to the LAPD. Because of the crime’s close proximity to the university, USC’s Department of Public Safety issued a schoolwide notification shortly after the shooting took place, but did not describe the nature of the crime to students.

“Police activity at the intersection of Jefferson Boulevard and Budlong Avenue but no immediate threat exists,” the email said. “Please stay away from the area.”

The shooting happened the same day LAPD released its annual crime report showing a 17% decrease in homicides from 2022-2023.
