A man lying down in Alumni Park was removed from campus today around 2 p.m. by two DPS officers.

They were responding to a tip from LiveSafe, USC’s mobile safety app, that a man was allegedly lighting a fire on campus. DPS said that when the officers arrived, smoke was present at the scene.

The man had plastic grocery bags, a bike, backpack and other personal belongings with him which he packed up after being approached by and talking with the officers.

According to a statement from the USC Department of Public Safety, “The man had cookware with him and there was smoke present when officers arrived. When the man was told that an open fire was hazardous, he decided to leave campus. He was not a student, faculty, or staff member.”

The officers on the scene “gave him a choice. If he wanted to cook with an open flame, he could leave campus,” DPS said.
