Most people don’t expect 70-degree weather for Thanksgiving, but students staying in L.A. for the holiday break may be thankful for warmer weather and the social events that USC has to offer.
USC Student Life is hosting a Thanksgiving lunch on Thanksgiving day from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. According to the EngageSC post, the lunch is offered to students who don’t have a meal plan, and they can enjoy an afternoon of “music, activities, and a traditional Thanksgiving meal!”
Graduate student Danielle White, in the material science PhD department, attended the lunch last year and is planning to again this year.
“They were playing holiday music, which was nice,” White said. “It felt nice to be appreciated and taken care of in that aspect.”
Viterbi is also hosting an on-campus event for its graduate students, the Fall Harvest Grad Student Study and Social. The event will offer a quiet place to study and free food.
Taking place this Friday at Ronald Tutor Hall, the Grad Student Study and Social will allow grad students a space to comfortably snack, study, and socialize with their peers. The event will take place in room 222.
Alex Bronz, Viterbi’s Associate Director for Student Services and Retention, said the Viterbi Learning Program is organizing the event. The program promotes academic support and tutoring on campus and a number of events throughout the semester that are open to both undergraduates and graduates.
“We will be having doors open with a number of private and group study spaces, snacks, some calming fall music, and just a nice time to socialize and get some work done ahead of the fall break,” Bronz said.
As finals are approaching, Bronz said the program aims to offer a warm, inviting and productive space to “meet with others and get some work done.”
The event will not be Thanksgiving-themed to allow for more variety in food and cultural celebrations. Instead, they will provide a range of sweet and savory snacks, including chips, juices, sodas, and more.
“It is definitely all you can eat, and we welcome anybody who’d like to drop by,” Bronz added.
In the future, the Viterbi Learning Program will continue to offer a number of events, open to all Viterbi students.
“We’re going to be wrapping up the month … doing some yoga, meditation, and drawing together to really break up the stress post-holidays, pre-holidays, pre-finals,” Bronz said.
