A contractor at the Hub Figueroa died on October 19 from electrocution, according to an email to Annenberg Media from the Los Angeles Fire Department Southwest Division.
The contractor was working in the ceiling and “made contact with an electrical source,” the LAFD said. Power was turned off and the contractor was unconscious in the ceiling upon LAFD arrival near 12:45 p.m. Firefighters extracted the contractor, who died on-site according to the Hub’s October 25 email to tenants.
The death pushed back the move-in date for students to November 11, which has since been moved a fourth time to November 16 due to paperwork issues.
The U.S. Department of Labor’s investigation of the death is ongoing.
“We are saddened to confirm that there was a tragic incident at the Hub LA Figueroa construction site on Thursday, October 19, resulting in the death of a tradesperson,” the Hub Figueroa wrote to Annenberg Media in an email on Thursday. Our hearts are heavy, and we send our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of this individual. Out of respect and privacy, we are not providing additional details about the incident.”
Update: The Hub Figueroa responded to Annenberg Media’s request for comment shortly after the publication of this article. The article has been updated to include the Hub Figueroa’s statement.
