Discovering ‘Recipes for Change’

Meet three Muslims in America who are finding ways to bring cultures together in the face of prejudice. For them, food has become a powerful tool for fostering tolerance.

For these three business owners, sharing food is a way to build accepting communities, educate others, and embrace cultural traditions in order to foster tolerance in America. Mother-daughter duo, Fatma and Rheyanah Muhammad-Williams, are co-business owners of the Knafeh Queens, where they are using the sweet Middle Eastern dessert to disprove hateful rhetoric and create meaningful connections. Restaurant-owner Bugra Arkin is using his cuisine to bring Uyghur culture to Los Angeles. Through his restaurant, Dolan’s Uyghur Cuisine, he hopes to bring awareness to the voices and experiences of Uyghur people. And for Summara Nawaz, her LA Chai Cart is a way to share and celebrate her culture and traditions with people outside of her community.
