In 1971, the Hebrew Union College, also known as HUC, moved their Los Angeles Campus from Hollywood to University Park. This was right next to USC, which at the time did not have a Jewish studies program. Today, USC and HUC’s partnership has provided graduate and doctoral programs for 50 years.
Leah Hochman, Director for the Louchheim School for Judaic studies, commented on the importance of the partnership.
Leah Hochman: “There’s nothing like it in the country or if not the world. And it’s just a really to me, an opportunity for two great institutions with different missions to come together in conversation with one another.”
Hochman also noted that the partnership is an opportunity for students from both campus’s to “maximize their learning goals” and “comparative study of religion and experience.”
According to Hochman, the partnership began when colleagues from USC’s School of Religion and HUC’s Jewish Institute of Religion formed a relationship. This transpired to a relationship between the deans who each saw value in what their respected colleges can provide: diversity, inclusion, equity.
The two schools aim to continue to demonstrate these values through a 25 year extended partnership..
