At the corner of Florence Avenue and Mountain View Avenue, one can see the blue and white exterior of Los Angelito’s Bakery. Located in Huntington Park, this bakery is showing off its special conchas made in honor of the Los Angeles Rams heading to the Super Bowl. Scents of sugar and bread waft through the air as staff moves around giving change to customers and putting food items on display.

Established in 1992, this Mexican Cuban-owned bakery was founded by the members of the Ductoc family. Deanna Ductoc, one of the co-owners of the business, said that the bakery started by her father and grandfather came as a means to support the family and give the family a better future.

“[My dad] contacted my grandfather,” she said. “He said, ‘Hey, do you do want to partner up? Let’s open up our own business,’ ... Neither one of them are bakers, which is the funniest thing.”

With the Rams winning the NFC Championship Game, the bakery began making several conchas to celebrate the occasion. Bakers at the back of the shop go through a process, which involves mixing dough, putting on paste, adding blue and yellow food coloring and putting the breads in the oven.

“The conchas mean a lot more than just pan dulce or Mexican sweet bread.” Ductoc said. “It’s more than just something that we eat and we enjoy, like a dessert. It brings back memories of when we shared it with our grandparents.”

Anyone who visits the bakery for the first time will see a wide array of cakes, cookies and pastries on display as well. This is is not the first time the bakery has made sports-themed conchas, though. In the past, the bakers have also produced purple and gold conchas in honor of Kobe Bryant who played for the Los Angeles Lakers and produced white and blue conchas for the Los Angeles Dodgers winning the World Series.

Los Angelito’s Bakery is open from 5am-9:30pm everyday of the week. Any person who comes into the bakery is welcome to take a Rams concha, but these blue and gold goods will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Pre-orders can still be made 24 hours in advance to guarantee that one gets their hands on the conchas.

The Rams conchas will remain in Los Angelito’s Bakery until after February 13. However, Ductoc notes that the results of the big game would likely change those plans.

“We actually have something special in mind, and we are really hoping that the Rams will win the Super Bowl,” she said. “When they do win, we are going to continue the Rams conchas and then hopefully implement something a little special for our community and the Rams fans that we have around here in L.A. and the surrounding area.”
