Why has the Netflix show been so popular and where did the name originate from?

Root Source: Shakespeare

The popular Korean-based Netflix show called “Squid Game” has taken over the internet with its gruesome action scenes. The show involves hundreds of contestants who have been in debt to win back the money they owe by playing childhood games. The only downside is the players who do not win get “eliminated.”

The question that we’re all wondering is: Where does the term “Squid Game” come from?

Well, the original term came from a game that kids around the neighborhood in South Korea played in the 70′s and 80′s. Children would play on a squid-shaped field that is really two small circles at the top and bottom of the field. The large triangle cuts through the top circle and the large squares cut through the bottom circle. The game is similar to Red Rover or an elaborate version of tag with attackers and defenders.

The goal of the Squid Game is for a member of the offense team, which starts on one end of the field, to tap the other end with their foot, also known as the squid’s head. However, the opposing team tries to stop them from reaching the other side of the field by pushing and pulling the members. When the game starts, the defense team runs around on two feet while the offense can only hop on one foot.

If you ever plan on re-enacting these childhood games, you should think twice about what you might be getting into.
