USC Thornton School of Music alumnus King Princess released her song ‘Monster’ today ahead of its feature in the new HBO Max special “Adventure Time: Distant Lands - Obsidian” which is set to release on Nov. 19.
King Princess' version of the song is featured in the trailer, but Olivia Olson, who voices the character Marceline in the series, will perform the song in the special.
The trailer starts with King Princess' song playing in the background as scenes of Marceline and Princess Bubblegum building furniture fill the screen. Things quickly turn when Marceline is notified that a dragon has returned to Glass Kingdom. Marceline returns with Princess Bubblegum to defeat the dragon, but she soon realizes that she must confront her rough past in order to stand a chance against the monster.
During the years of the show’s run, originally on Cartoon Network, many fans of the original Adventure Time series “shipped” Marceline and Princess Bubblegum, or rooted for the pair to become a couple.
The pair have their own “ship” name, “Bubbline,” and have been celebrated as a good example of lesbian representation in the media. The romance between the characters was confirmed in the 2018 series finale with a kiss.
King Princess, a well-known member of the gay community, acknowledged the fictional couple’s place in the gay community.
“Did the coolest thing I prolly ever done, I sang and produced a song for one of my all time favorite shows, Adventure Time,” King Princess wrote in an Instagram post, “It’s gay as all hell and I’m so honored they asked me to do it <3 watch this cuz it’s next level !!”
Online, fans have become even more excited about the upcoming film, thanks to the recent trailer debut and the release of King Princess' ‘Monster.’ The trailer has been viewed nearly 800,000 times on YouTube since its release on Nov. 9 and the tweet from Cartoon Network releasing the trailer has been liked over 55,000 times.
“Adventure Time: Distant Lands - Obsidian” will be available exclusively on HBO Max on Thursday, Nov. 19.
