USC Annenberg adjunct professor to compete on ABC’s ‘The Bachelorette’

Garin Flowers is a contestant on the upcoming 16th season, which premieres Tuesday.

Roses are red, Trojans are gold, Garin Flowers will be on the Bachelorette, what will unfold? Garin Flowers, 34, Emmy-nominated and AP Award-winning journalist, is set to be one of the contestants on Season 16 of The Bachelorette. Flowers joined the Trojan Family in January of 2020 as an adjunct professor at Annenberg, where he is currently a writing coach for the South LA desk and the social media desk.

In addition to teaching, Flowers continues to wear many hats within the entertainment industry. According to his USC Annenberg Faculty biography, he is an “on-camera host, writer and content creator.” Flowers has interviewed some of the most notable names in Hollywood, including Dwayne Johnson, Daniel Craig, Jamie Lee Curtis, Will Smith, Chris Evans and Kevin Hart. He has also been a general assignments reporter throughout Florida for the past eight years.

Colleagues and students alike were caught off guard when they saw Flowers' face and name appear on The Bachelorette’s ‘MEET THE MEN’ tweet on Sept. 29. Flowers is an alumnus of the University of South Florida, where he served as the student body president. Now that the news of his appearance on the show is out, many of his former peers are planning on tuning in to the premiere.  Salomon Laguerre, who now works as an attorney and adjunct law professor at Florida State University, reflected on seeing his long-time friend on the show.

“Garin was one of the first friends I made in college over 15 years ago. We lived in the same dorm right down the hall from each other. It’s a bit surreal to hear he will be on the show. But it’s also not surprising, knowing him and his ambition. I don’t think I’ve ever watched a full episode of the Bachelorette. But come next week, I’ll be in front of the TV cheering on my old friend,” said Laguerre.

The anticipation of seeing Flowers on The Bachelorette has led some who know Flowers to become first time viewers. Misty Cash, an executive secretary for Leon County Schools, has known him since he was working as a reporter in Tallahassee in 2011. Her work in public relations led her to connect with Flowers, and the two have remained friends.

“To be honest, I have never watched The Bachelorette, but as soon as I heard Garin was going to be on, I put the premiere date on my calendar,” said Cash. “He is such a nice guy and always a pleasure to work with. I’m so excited for him and all his success. He is really going to win some hearts!”

This season is set to be a little different from previous seasons. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the season was filmed at a La Quinta by Wyndham in Palm Springs, California, instead of multiple locations. According to E Online, there is also a potential leading lady switch in the midst of the season.

When reached by Annenberg Media, Flowers declined to comment.

The Annenberg community will definitely be rooting for Flowers as he begins the journey to FIGHT ON to find true love.
