From a housing density perspective, Los Angeles can be considered one giant suburb. At first glance, this apparent built-in resistance to the spread of infectious disease seems an unexpected benefit to the city’s infamous urban sprawl. But many other mid-density, suburban locales are faring worse, and it’s too soon to tell if urban sprawl itself can be lauded for slowing the spread of COVID-19. So far, the data suggest it might also just be dumb luck.
