Cruelty Free Clothing Comes to Fashion Week

How designers are making sure their clothes are vegan

Still from "Cruelty Free Clothing Comes to Fashion Week " - One of many items of apparel that expresses the edginess of vegan fashion.

The first vegan fashion trade show, according to organizers, took place during Los Angeles’ coveted fashion week. The theme was “Fashion is activism,” and everything there was made without animal products.

“In LA there tends to be a healthy and very sustainable mecca, we’re trying to make the LA the hub for that mantra,” said event organizer Ray Calleros

Not only were all the clothes vegan, which means no animals were harmed in the process of making them, but most were sustainable, which means they had no chemicals that are biodegradable or that could harm the environment.

“A lot of people don’t think about how my shoes could be vegan but the glue that is made to put the shoe together itself is not vegan, that’s made out of an animal product,” said retailer Kacie Kone.

Kacie Kone used to work for a fast fashion company which sold cheap clothes for short-lived trends.

“I was just disgusted by some of the things that I was seeing and the waste we were producing a company and started passionately lookng for sustainbale brands,” said Kone.

More people seem to agree. California recently banned the sale of new fur products. And, Google trends show “Vegan Fashion” searches gone up significantly in the five years.
