A newsroom is not complete without its team. In order to put on a great show every week, every member of the newsroom needs to collaborate and work together to accomplish things. From the morning pitch meetings to the end of the very last segment on our live show, producers, multimedia journalists, reporters, anchors, directors, and the studio crew work together to create a show that we are proud of. Every week our show improves in terms of quality and content because members of the newsroom have developed stronger relationships with each other.
In the beginning few weeks, it was difficult to execute a singular vision for the show because it took a while to navigate our team chemistry. However, as the semester went on, we all became familiar with everyone's unique style of doing things and getting tasks done. Specifically, for the producers, we were all still learning how to be a team, and the best way to successfully delegate tasks to our multimedia journalists. For example, I like to assign our reporters to stories via Trello and have updates on the story management tool, while the other producers prefer communicating via text.
As a producer, it is essentially your job to be able to differentiate between everyone's strengths and weaknesses to successfully utilize your team. My team of two other producers and I have definitely improved communicating with each other and letting each other know what needs to be finished.
Because our dynamic as a team has improved, our shows have gotten better too. We've been creative by incorporating new segments like "Tuesday's Tea," and "What's Trendy?" to give our audience a fresh and exciting look at our show. Additionally, as a result of better communication skills, my teammates and I are more productive and are able to keep track of our various reporters throughout the day. Not only has our relationship with our reporters grown exponentially but with the rest of the newsroom as well. This relationship creates a foundational level of trust that is needed in order to work effectively in a newsroom environment.
Overall, teamwork makes the dream work. I am happy with our progress as a newsroom and excited to continue to bring new content to our show every week.
