Jose Antonio Vargas talks new book, elementary school named after him

The book, Dear America: Notes of an Undocumented Citizen, details his experience as an undocumented journalist working to establish a life in the U.S. An elementary school slated to open next fall in Mountain View has also been named after him.

Jose Antonio Vargas came out as an undocumented individual publicly through essays published in the New York Times and Time magazine. Although he feared that the “deporter-in-chief,” former President Barack Obama, would also deport him, he continued to shed light on the narrative of immigration. Now, he can’t believe that he’s published a book of his own, let alone had a school named after him that plans to teach its students about immigration.
