Two Steps to Audience Engagement

In order to drive audience engagement, as journalists, we must let audiences know what they should be thinking about

In order to engage a larger audience for ATVN, especially in terms of a USC audience, I think there are two vital steps that must be taken. First, the stories that we do must relate back to either Los Angeles or students. Whether something is happening at the local level, the national level, or even the international level, the more relatable a story is, the more likely people will be interested in hearing about it.

Secondly, the fact that we are doing a particular story and the fact that it is relatable to our audience must be advertised. One way that I believe we can do this is through digital videos. I understand digital videos to be a trend that have taken over peoples' newsfeeds, especially since they are easily shareable. If we somehow were able to get previews of stories we are doing out through digital videos earlier in the day, students would be exposed to the things that affect them, and therefore (ideally) want to learn more.

I believe the solution to getting a broader and more engaged audience lies in exposing students to what it is they can and are affected by. While there are limitations to using digital videos, such as the time they take to make and the boundary that exists by adding "Learn more at 6!," I do believe that this is a mechanism to drive viewers to watch our shows or follow up on the stories that we do.
