Dodger Stadium Gets New Address To Recognize Vin Scully

Crews took down the Elysian Park Avenue street sign to replace it with Vin Scully Avenue in honor of Dodger's greatest sportscaster.

This may be Vin Scully's last season as a Dodgers sportscaster but his name is staying.

The street leading up to Gate A of Dodger's Stadium is now Vin Scully Avenue instead of Elysian Park.

"I have to thank all mighty God for allowing me to be this old to continue to do something I have loved all my life," said Vin Scully, sportscaster for the LA Dodgers.

More than a hundred fans came to the dedication ceremony held at Dodger Stadium on Monday to celebrate with Vin Scully.

One fan who arrived an hour before the event took three months to paint a mural of Vin Scully just for the ceremony.

Scully was accompanied by his wife, Mayor Eric Garcetti, Councilmember Gil Cedillo and Stan Kasten, CEO of the LA Dodgers. During the ceremony, the group unveiled one of the new Vin Scully Avenue street signs.

For 67 years, Dodger fans have listened to Vin Scully calling the games. Fans who have been Dodger fans for decades say Scully's voice is the thing they will miss most when he retires after this season.

"You have taught us baseball," said Mayor Eric Garcetti. "You have taught us Dodgers. You have been the voice and the heart of this city."

"Maybe on the final day of my final broadcast, I will somehow come up with the magic words you deserve," said Scully.

Fans took the time after the ceremony to take pictures in front of the new address sign at Gate A. But, not everyone supported the street name change.

"Only 13 people responded to the letter saying 'Are you for or against this change?'" said Jackie Valladares, a resident in the area. "10 people said no, three people said yes and they still did it."

Valladares was particularly frustrated that the city did not inform the residents about the change soon enough.

"People who live on this street have to go to the DMV, have to change their addresses," said Valladares.

But, most believed the address change was the perfect way to recognize the voice of the Dodgers.

"When you came to a baseball game, the only thing you left with was Vin Scully's voice," said one Dodger fan.

The LA Dodgers have their season opener Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
