Witty lyrics and dialogue are paired with a sensational score to produce "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder," a cheeky new musical at the Ahmanson Theatre. In this hysterical comedy, Monty Navarro (Kevin Massey) discovers that he is ninth in line for the title of Earl of Highhurst. On his quest for power, wealth, and—most importantly—the love of Sibella Hallward (Kristen Beth Williams), Monty decides to murder the eight relatives that stand in his way. Things get more complicated as he falls for his cousin Phoebe D'Ysquith (Adrienne Eller) and the death count continues to climb.
It's no surprise that "A Gentleman's Guide" had resounding praise during its time on Broadway. With skilled actors, delightful music, and stunning technical elements, Darko Tresnjak's imaginative staging and attention to detail culminated in a truly exceptional production. In particular, John Rapson's performance as eight different D'Ysquith family members propels the story forward. Rapson's incredible ability to create such distinct, quirky characters and shift between them so effortlessly proves transfixing. Similarly, Kevin Massey illustrates his mastery of comedy, along with his exemplary voice, in his performance as the psychopathic yet charismatic Monty. Kristen Beth Williams and Adrienne Eller create a deliciously charming love triangle that inspires numerous, uproarious musical numbers.

Robert L. Freedman and Steven Lutvak's whimsical melodies and clever wordplay perfectly complement the twisting plot. Likewise, the artful costuming by Linda Cho allowed John Rapson to seamlessly change from one vibrant character to the next while providing an eye-catching accompaniment to the decadent sets. The ingenious scenic design of Alexander Dodge allows the show to flexibly transition from a church tower to a lavish parlor to an enchanting winter resort.
With music that hearkens back to the golden-age musicals and delightfully impertinent humor, "A Gentleman's Guide" is a must see. Monty's creative means of murder, complicated love life, and enchanting musical numbers leave audiences dying for the next twist.
"A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder" is playing at the Ahmanson Theatre at the Music Center Downtown Los Angeles (135 North Grand Ave.) through May 1st. For more information, visit www.CenterTheatreGroup.org.
