Students struggle to balance academics and election stress

As final exam season nears, students are having a difficult time balancing the weight of the election with their academics.

The election fell at a very inconvenient time for college students...final exam season. Student stress is at an all time high. Here’s Emily Bonilla with an inside look on how students are managing their peaked anxiety both with the election, and getting their assignments done on time.

The anxiety levels were up all of yesterday, Election Day, and still today. Some students find themselves lost all together, with school work still being assigned and a presidential race like no other. USC business major Gabriella Jacobson believes that the University should have put more efforts into giving students time to practice their democratic responsibilities during these stressful times.

“I mean, I think they should change the curriculum to work with the we’re just like have a period where that’s dedicated just to, like, your democratic responsibilities, because I felt that it was hard to be present in kind of two worlds like my school life versus this like mine, kind of like civic duty life.”

Like Jacobson, Aurora Herminda, a senior at NYU said that her concentration levels seemed to fly out the window, even considering that she is studying hard to get into law school.

“I literally was studying for the LSAT and I could not, I could not do it. I just couldn’t do it. I’ve been feeling horrible, I’m super anxious, I’m nervous, it’s not just like a global thing, but it’s a personal thing, too”

Herminda finds herself to be extra stressed as she is the only person in her family of nine that does not support President Trump. With the presidential votes still rolling in, she’s not too sure where exactly her headspace should be at.

“I’ve been, like, consistently checking on the polls. I don’t know, it’s honestly unhealthy. Like, I should stop, but I can’t. I’m too nervous, too nervous. Twitter’s blowing up. Trump is an idiot on Twitter. Everything’s bad.”

Nicole Sullivan, is a junior at Fordham University. She had a different school day experience yesterday.

“Our whole school closes on Election Day.”

Although Sullivan was able to escape her classes, the election tension between Nicole and her roommates got to be too much that they couldn’t even hang out together.

" Last night, we kind of held off on talking about it. We split up. People went downstairs like some of us stayed upstairs. But it is a topic of conversation that we do bring up a lot. Within like the divide of the roommates, like, I definitely like, had better conversations with, like one of the two that are on the opposing side with me. So like some some aren’t that willing to speak about their views."

Was it Abraham Lincoln who said something about a house divided will not stand?" Well he was referring to the whole country, oh yeah we have that issue too...For Annenberg media, I’m Emily Bonilla
