This Sunday, Hollywood’s biggest names will come together to celebrate the 92nd annual Academy Awards. A recent report by the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative found there was increased diversity across the film industry over the last decade, but award shows like the Oscars fail to recognize that progress.
At this years ceremony, no women are nominated for Best Director, and across all four acting categories, only one non-white actor, Cynthia Erivo, is nominated.
The Inclusion Initiative examined the portrayal of under-represented groups in popular films over the past 11 years. They found that, among over the thousand films they analyzed, only 5% had female directors.
The voting populace of the Academy also appears to lack diversity. A voting member of the Academy anonymously told the Hollywood Reporter that she only wanted an American director to win because, “The Oscars are an American thing.”
The Academy Awards will air this Sunday at 5 p.m. PT on ABC.
