New regulations on sober living in Orange County

A new ordinance was approved today in Orange County as part of a crackdown on sober living facilities ─ a largely unregulated industry across California that officials say is rife with abuse.

Sober houses for people recovering from addictions, known collectively as the "sober living industry," have been racked by scandal over the last several years. Instances of predatory recruitment practices, lack of background checks on potentially dangerous staff and many other issues have led to calls for increased regulatory oversight. Officials in Orange County say that an ordinance passed today is the first step in addressing these problems.
