September averages more than one bike theft a day

After 37 bikes were stolen in the month of September, students and DPS give prevention tips and stress the bike registration program.

Approximately 10,000 bikes are on the USC campus daily, according to DPS. However, only about a third are registered. Though on average 20 to 30 bikes are stolen a month, September had 37 reported thefts. The registration program gives bike owners a chance to retrieve their bike if found by DPS. Reporting a stolen and registered bike gives DPS the chance to be on the lookout, and the authority to recover bikes if found. However, found and abandoned bikes, if not registered, can only be kept for 90 days before DPS donates it to local charities.
